Several summer closures are planned to accommodate essential upgrades and repairs at North Delta’s Sungod Recreation Centre.
The initial phase of the project will involve closing the east parking lot from June 24 until the end of August to allow for repaving and installation of amenities including additional accessible parking spaces, more electric vehicle chargers and improved lighting.
The larger parking lot to the west of the facility will remain open during the east lot closure.
Meanwhile, the aquatic centre will be closed from Aug. 12 to Sept. 8 while workers upgrade the pool’s roof.
Those repairs will coincide with the centre’s regularly-scheduled annual maintenance shutdown Aug. 26 to 30. Sungod’s gymnasium, fitness centre and customer service will all be closed over those five days.
“Sungod Recreation Centre is a major focal point in North Delta and has provided over 40 years of programming and service to the community. These necessary upgrades and repairs will greatly extend the lifespan of our busiest and most popular facility and ensure it continues to meet the needs of our city for years to come,” Trent Reid, Delta’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said in a press release.
As a result of the closures, aquatics programming such as swimming lessons and AquaFit classes will be temporarily cancelled.
The city will be expanding program capacity at North Delta Outdoor Pool, Ladner Outdoor Pool, Ladner Leisure Centre and Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre to accommodate service disruption caused by the Sungod closures.
As well, the city will be extending the schedule at North Delta Outdoor Pool keeping the facility open until Sept. 8.
