Surrey firefighters were called to a brush fire in Green Timbers Urban Forest Park Friday afternoon — but the blaze was reportedly quickly extinguished.
A Black Press freelancer on the scene noted the fire service was called at about 1:30 p.m. Friday (July 26) for the fire, near 140 Street and 94A Avenue, but firefighters were able to contain it before it spread into the trees or nearby power lines.
"It wasn't much of anything – about a 20 to 30-foot patch of grass on fire down a trail," Fire Chief Dennis Bull of Surrey Fire Service told Black Press Friday afternoon. "It managed to scorch a Hydro pole a little."
While the cause hadn't been identified, he said the incident is another opportunity to warn residents about the need to take care not to do anything that could cause a fire, particularly during hot summer days, and to be quick to call in any incident.
"We want people to be really careful about discarded cigarette butts and things like that," he said. "It doesn't take much and the next thing you know the whole of Green Timbers could be on fire."
