Police in Surrey (seen here in May 2023) responded to a reported assault outside William F. Davidson Elementary School on Sept. 19.

A 39-year-old man has been charged after an assault took place outside of an elementary school in the Guildford neighbourhood of Surrey.

Amandeep Singh Gosal, 39, allegedly entered the grounds of a school in the area of 156 Street and 99 A Avenue of Surrey, where William F. Davidson Elementary is located. On Sept. 19 at about 2:30 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to the report of an assault that saw the suspect flee the scene.

Gosal allegedly assaulted a man with a weapon and then fled in a vehicle, with the victim sustaining "minor injuries," reads a statement from Surrey RCMP's Sgt. Tammy Lobb.

The Thursday afternoon incident did not involve any students or staff of the school, Lobb added.

Shortly after the incident, the youth section of Surrey RCMP located the suspect and arrested him, leading to the court appearance of Gosal a few days later.

On Sept. 23, Gosal was charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with release order. He is set to appear next in Surrey provincial court on Oct. 2.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Conservative Party MLA Elenore Sturko, who is a former RCMP officer, shared what appears to be a letter home from the elementary school to families after the incident.

"Several students may have witnessed the assault, and we realize some students may have filmed it while it was occurring. If your child did film/post this video, please ask them to remove it from social media immediately," the letter to parents and guardians reads.

Sturko also alleged that the suspect used a sword to assault the victim, but Surrey RCMP said this claim and additional details could not be confirmed as the matter is before the courts.

“We are thankful no one was seriously injured during this random incident, and Surrey RCMP continues to work closely with Surrey School District as safety of our school community is a top priority," Lobb said.
