The City of Surrey is trying to purge the scourge of illegal dumping here.

According to a press release issued by the City, illegal dumping costs Surrey taxpayers roughly $750,000 each year and in 2023 city staff recorded 7,570 illegal dumping sites.

In an effort to curb this, "enhanced" bylaw officer patrols are underway and surveillance cameras are set up with fines up to $10,000 aimed at offenders.

Also, residents are being encouraged to participate in the Free Waste Drop-off Program and Large Item Pickup Program. With the latter, residents can schedule up to six free pickups per year – eight for registered secondary suites – by booking online at surrey.ca/largeitems or calling 604-590-7289 (press 3).

As for the Free Waste Drop-off, 100 kilograms of junk and four mattresses can be dropped off for free at Metro Vancouver’s Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centres until Sept. 25. Check out surrey.ca/wastecentres for more information.

A two-week clean-up "blitz" in May saw 1,598 garbage bags filled with trash removed as well as 1,833 "illegally dumped items."

The next such "blitz" is expected to take place later this month.
