Surrey, White Rock shelters remain open in extreme weather alert

The Homelessness Services Association of B.C. issued an alert Tuesday (Nov. 12) due to heavy rainfall expected in Metro Vancouver overnight.

Extra community-based shelters will remain open in Surrey and White Rock on Tuesday and Wednesday due a rainfall and wind warning.

The Homelessness Services Association of B.C. issued an alert Tuesday (Nov. 12) due to heavy rainfall expected in Metro Vancouver overnight.

Environment Canada issued an alert stating that a weather system will bring 50 to 80 mm of rainfall and wind gusts 90 to 100 km/h tonight (Nov. 12) into Wednesday.

"A vigorous Pacific frontal system will move over the B.C. coast tonight (Nov. 12) into Wednesday. Steady rain will start this afternoon and intensify in the evening," reads the alert. Rain will ease to light showers by Wednesday evening."

The following community-based shelters in Surrey and White Rock will remain open, according to a bulletin from the Surrey-White Rock Extreme Weather Response team.

  • Surrey Alliance Church: 13474 96th Avenue between 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The site is accessible through the breezeway entrance in the rear parking lot. No pets. For adults 19+
  • South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre EWR: 14601 20th Ave. between 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The site is accessible near the lower parking lot. The site is pet-friendly and pet accessible. For adults 19+
