Wandering horses hit South Surrey streets after escape from field

Mounties provide escort for horses found wandering near Redwood Park

A pair of equine escapees on the loose in South Surrey Tuesday morning are safe and sound with a neighbour after receiving a police escort to secure pastures.

Sandy Roberts said a trio of Mounties was dispatched to the area of 182 Street and 21A Avenue to assist with reining in a pair of wandering Arabians, after the horses were spotted on surveillance cameras at 5 a.m. roaming near Redwood Park.

"Animal control wasn't open yet, so they send the police out in case there's a danger," Roberts said.

"It was quite cute. I had one (officer) in front, one behind and one with one of the horses."

The entourage walked the horses the two blocks to Roberts' property, where they're expected to remain until tomorrow.

Roberts said the owner – who did not want to discuss what happened with Peace Arch News – told her the pair had escaped from a newly rented 15-acre field, after they discovered a stretch without fenceline; the route out was apparently uncovered by the removal of brambles.

Prior to locating the owner, a post to the South Surrey/White Rock Community Group Facebook page about the mystery pair sparked multiple comments, many of them tongue-in-cheek.

"We just have a free roam zoo in whiterock now? Honestly not complaining," writes one commenter.

"Arabs are always escape artists lol," notes another.

"There's gonna be an ark soon, I can feel it…" another commenter adds.

The wild morning follows multiple posts in recent days about a bear spotted wandering in the Grandview Heights area.

Roberts said the horses, both female, will stay on her property while the fencing issue is dealt with.

"They're good, they're safe and sound, and they're quite happy. Water, hay – they got it all. I told (the owner) not to worry about them."
