Two Surrey-based wrestlers are among the 13 named to Team Canada for the 2024 U20 World Championships, Sept. 2-8, in Pontevedra, Spain.
They are Rohit Bal, a member of the Canadian Mal Wrestling Club in Newton, to compete in the freestyle 86KG division, and Sehaj Sidhu (Burnaby Mountain club), a 70KG freestyler.
Bal and Sidhu are among five B.C.-based athletes with Team Canada at U20 Worlds, as listed on wrestling.ca. The others are Maple Ridge's Madisyn Grof (WW 55KG) and the Abbotsford pair Jorawar Dhinsa (Greco-Roman 130KG) and Tejvir Dhinsa (FS 97KG).
The U20 team will compete in Spain "with strong momentum behind them after solid performances at the 2024 Pan-Am Championships," in Lima, Peru, in July, according to an announcement from Wrestling Canada Lutte.
“The U20 World Championships is an opportunity for our wrestlers who have had some international success at the Pan-American (Pan-Am) level to test themselves against the very best the world has to offer,” said Chris Woodcroft, High Performance Director for Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL), governing body for Olympic style wrestling in Canada.
“We have a mixed group of competitors attending these championships, some of whom will be their first experience at the world level and others who were fortunate to be returning to the world stage. We look forward to watching our next generation of wrestlers in action.”
