Yes, summer is the time to get your winter heating equipment ready for fall!

The summer sun is still shining but before long, crisp, fall days and winter’s chill will be upon us.

Don’t get caught in the cold! The last thing you want when the weather cools is to find out that your furnace needs servicing, or worse, no longer works at all.

Heat when you need it!

Just as maintenance is the key to keeping your car running, it’s just as important to ensure your home heating system gets the regular servicing it needs. You’ll ensure your system continues operating at peak efficiency and help increase its longevity, explains Daniel Blouin, General Manager of Hilltop Plumbing and Heating.

“August is the best time to get a qualified service technician in to check that all of the components of a system are running properly and even spot trouble before it starts,” Blouin says.

For example, most people know to change the furnace filter, but did you know that dust can settle on the electrical components? That dust can cause the electrical components to overheat causing malfunctions, costing you money, and preventing your home from being as warm as it could be.

Efficiency = savings for you and the environment

As your furnace ages, it becomes less and less efficient, and a 40-year-old furnace may be running at less than 60 per cent efficiency. This is a result of carbon (a product of combustion) covering the heat exchanger. A new furnace runs between 95 and 98 per cent efficiency, saving you money, keeping you warmer and benefiting the environment too.

Government rebates are available through FortisBC for homeowners wishing to install a high-efficiency natural-gas furnace, with installation taking about a day, Blouin says.

The locally owned Hilltop Plumbing and Heating opened in 1972 and is a proud member of the South Surrey/White Rock community. Hilltop uses high-quality, top-rated, Ruud furnaces, built to handle Canadian winters.

Hilltop Plumbing and Heating can also install high-efficiency Navien tankless hot-water-on-demand units, Navien radiant-heat boilers, and combination boilers that provide heat and hot water on-demand without a bulky tank. These stream-lined units replace inefficient tank heaters, save water, natural gas or electricity, and have the added benefits of an endless hot water supply, lower and a longer product life.

Indoor allergies?

If you’re an allergy sufferer, or just don’t like the thought of breathing in dirty air (we all know what dust is made of!), Blouin suggests several ways to ensure the air your family breathes is as clean as it can be:

  • change the filter every three months
  • install UV lights to eliminate air-borne allergens
  • consider an electric filter that cleans the air to remove many allergens
  • duct cleaning, a service offered by Hilltop Plumbing and Heating as a stand alone or as part of a furnace-service package, provides added peace of mind and makes your system more efficient, too
