U.S. border officers at the Pacific Highway crossing arrested one man after more than 24 kilograms (53 pounds) of ecstasy was found in a southbound vehicle Saturday.

According to a news release Tuesday evening, the drugs were discovered after two men – aged 40 and 33 years – in a Hyundai Santa Fe were referred for inspection around 11:30 a.m. June 10. The pair had told the officer at the primary booth that they were visiting the U.S. for pleasure.

The drugs were found in a hidden compartment in the vehicle.

Both the drugs and vehicle were seized; one man was arrested, the release states.

Area port director Kenneth Williams said the seizure “demonstrates the vigilance of our CBP officers and their excellence in detecting those who try to smuggle illegal substances.”

“Our officers work tirelessly every day protecting our borders and keeping dangerous narcotics out of the hands of our children.”

The case is being investigated by the Blaine Border Enforcement Security Task Force.
