Arrest in violent White Rock altercation

35-year-old charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon

One of two men sought in connection with a violent assault last week in White Rock has been arrested.

White Rock RCMP Const. Chantal Sears said a 35-year-old was arrested around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, by Surrey RCMP.

“We received a tip from the public that he was in the area, and an officer located him,” she told Peace Arch News.

Avery Richard McGuire appeared in Surrey Provincial Court Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

Police began looking for two men after an altercation at a home in the 15900-block of Buena Vista Avenue resulted in a 34-year-old man being taken to hospital with head injuries and a deep laceration to his arm. (The victim was initially described as a 24-year-old.)

Police were called to the home around 2 p.m. May 1, and later confirmed to PAN that one of the suspects, as well as the victim, was a resident of the home.

Sears said police recommended a charge of aggravated assault against both suspects, who she described as known to police.

Tuesday’s arrest took place in the 2200-block of 156 Street. The accused, who was arrested without incident, remains in custody.

A second suspect remains at large.

Surrey resident Gagunjodh (Gary) Rai, 29, is wanted for aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
