A pile of garbage at White Rock Beach – shown on March 7 – was first reported to city officials on Feb.16.

Garbage dumped several weeks ago near the railroad tracks on White Rock's West Beach is expected to be removed on Friday, according to a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson.

"The only access in to this area is by rail, so we will escort people in by rail and remove the material, we expect on Friday," Gus Melonas told Peace Arch News Tuesday.

"We are working with authorities and action will be taken against these violators. We will continue to inspect the area closely."

The large pile of debris – including more than a dozen shopping bags full of garbage and other items – was first brought to the City of White Rock's attention via social media by Carson Burgin.

Burgin sent a photo of the garbage to the city's Twitter account on Feb. 16.

City staff told Peace Arch News on Feb. 18 it was co-ordinating with BNSF to have the debris removed.

Weeks later, on March 7, Burgin noticed the garbage was still there and sent another photo to the city with the caption "It's been over two weeks since you said you'd send an OPS crew to clean up the trash...yet nothing has been done."

Earlier this week, in an email to PAN, city staff noted: "The removal requires flaggers, permission, co-ordination with trains because of its proximity to the tracks. We hope to see the garbage removed shortly and appreciate the online post that brought this to city attention."
