Temporary shelters were opened for homeless people seeking shelter from the cold in White Rock Surrey and Delta for three days this week, as nighttime temperatures dropped below freezing.

The Monday-to-Wednesday order was issued by Peter Fedos, the extreme weather coordinator for the region.

That made 60 beds available at Surrey Urban Mission on 13388 104 Ave., 15 at Cloverdale Christian Fellowship, at 17802 66 Ave., 15 at First United Church in White Rock, 15385 Semiahmoo Ave., and nine at Ladner United Church in Delta.

Earlier this year, Fedos said White Rock and Surrey have been experiencing more extreme weather warnings than other areas of Metro Vancouver.

"It tends to get colder here," he said.

"We've been pretty busy."

Warmer weather was forecast for Thursday.
