Rachna Singh is seeking to replace longtime MLA Sue Hammel as the NDP representative in Surrey-Green Timbers.

Singh is the lone candidate seeking the party nomination in the riding. A nomination meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29.

The vacancy was created when Hammell announced earlier this month she would not seek re-election after serving as MLA in the Green Timbers constituency for 20 of the past 25 years. Her husband is ill, and Hammell said she wants to spend more time with her family.

Singh said she will work hard every day to earn the trust of voters.

"I will do my very best to build on the work of Sue Hammell," said Singh. "I am honoured and humbled by the outpouring of support and encouragement from grassroots New Democrats who’ve asked me to run for the nomination."

Singh emigrated to Canada from India 15 years ago with her husband and family, and immediately began working and volunteering in the community.

She has been a union activist for several years, and has a masters of psychology degree. She has worked as a drug and alcohol counsellor and as a support worker for victims of domestic violence and people living with addictions.

The provincial election is scheduled for May 9, 2017.
