Here’s the latest on the pandemic in Surrey, White Rock and beyond for Thursday, July 2:

• The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. climbed to an all-time high of more than 50,000 per day on Thursday, with the infection curve rising in 40 out of 50 states in a reversal that has largely spared only the Northeast.

• A hastily imposed B.C. emergency order giving local councils authority to bar the public from meetings is being retroactively repaired by the NDP government, after B.C. Ombudsperson Jay Chalke said it was done illegally.

• The pandemic may have quashed Canada Day festivities on the waterfront, but a Peninsula woman took cancellation of one particular event in stride this week.

• While the Junos usually mark the biggest night for the country’s music industry, the Monday event, which streamed online, took on a noticeably different tone in isolation.

• Have you voted in Peace Arch Newsweekly poll: In the absence of public gatherings, did you find a way to celebrate Canada Day?

• As Canada’s two largest airlines move to end so-called seat distancing, travellers have mixed feelings about stepping on board an aircraft in the age of COVID-19.

• Staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital had a royal chat with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

• In the more than three months since the Toronto Raptors stepped off the court, the players have been scattered abroad.

• As provincial leaders across the country ease restrictions put in place to curb COVID-19, health officials are reminding Canadians to be diligent while stopping short of making non-medical masks mandatory.
