The Delta Nature Reserve will remain partially closed while city crews continue dealing with the damage left behind by last month’s windstorm.

In a press release issued Thursday evening, the city said the inner boardwalk loop has been reopened the public but that tree removal and restoration work continues along the outer boardwalk loop, which will remain closed for the time being. The statement did not say when the entire reserve will reopen, only that the closure is temporary.

Delta police, fire and engineering crews received hundreds of calls after the storm hit on Dec. 20, knocking over trees and damaging power lines, leaving almost 21,000 customers in the city without power, though no injuries were reported.

City crews closed the reserve on Dec. 21 and began tree removal work, which is still ongoing. Workers have had trouble accessing parts of the Delta Nature Reserve due to wet ground and fallen trees, slowing restoration efforts.

“Since the windstorm on Dec. 20, staff have been diligently working to address public safety issues across the city,” city manager Sean McGill said in the press release. “With respect to the Delta Nature Reserve, staff assessed the situation as soon as possible and continue to work to open the area to public access as soon as safety concerns are addressed.”
