On the heels of a flurry of murders in Surrey, the city's top cop is telling residents they're safe.
Four people have been killed in Surrey in three separate shootings in less than two days.
According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), two of the three shootings were gang-related, with the victims believed to be associates of the Dhak-Dhure gang, which is allegedly involved in an ongoing conflict with the Red Scorpions, Hells Angels and Independent Soldiers.
At about 7 p.m. Sunday, Manjot Dhillon was shot near 168 Street and 76 Avenue. He was transported to hospital where he died at 11:30 p.m.
Then on Tuesday, just after 2 a.m., Manjinder Singh Hairan, 29, was fatally gunned down near 127 Street and 112B Avenue in Bridgeview.
Another man was seriously injured, and while police aren't releasing a name, The Leader has learned it was Jujhar Singh Khun-Khun.
Khun-Khun (pictured left) was shot in Surrey a-year-and-a-half ago, in what police believe was a retaliation hit for the Kelowna shooting of Red Scorpion Jonathan Bacon and Larry Amero of the White Rock Hells Angels.
Amero and others were injured, while Bacon died.
Khun-Khun also made news in Surrey in 2007 after his 19-year-old fianceé was killed when she fell from the moving SUV he was driving. No charges were laid in that case.
The same year, Khun-Khun was sentenced, along with an associate, to three years in prison for kidnapping and robbing a truck driver – an incident the judge called "random, brazen and senseless."
Both victims of gang-related shootings this week are believed to have connections with the Dhak-Dhure group, whose leader, Gurmit Dhak, 32, was shot dead at Burnaby's Metrotown shopping centre parking lot in October, 2010.
IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound said it would be premature to characterize the shootings as evidence of a gang war.
And on Sunday, in a non-gang-related shooting, John McGiveron and Geordie Carlow, both 33, were found shot to death in an apartment parkade near 128 Street and 94 Avenue just before midnight.
Acknowledging that some residents may be fearful after the shootings, Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said in a press release that residents are safe.
Fordy said the violence has been restricted to those involved in illegal activities, as is the case in other cities, too.
"There is nothing glamourous about life in the underworld of crime," he said. "This is not television – the harsh reality is being played out here and now and is a testament to the fact that the life expectancy of anyone involved in criminal gangs is very short.
“If you involve yourself in this level of criminal activity, the likelihood of you ending up dead in a ditch or in jail is very high. I would say it is inevitable."
