A 26-year-old Aldergrove man with a 10-year driving ban was arrested Thursday, following an hour-long dangerous driving spree. He is accused of running red lights and driving into oncoming traffic.

Cody Ball was eventually taken down by police, but not before an officer and his dog crashed his vehicle down an embankment, sending the Mountie to hospital.

On March 12, at around 9 p.m., police received several 911 calls about a vehicle being driven erratically in South Surrey.

Witnesses described seeing a man in a Pontiac Trans Am driving at a high rate of speed. Surrey RCMP attempted to pull the vehicle over but it fled.

To ensure the safety of the public, Air One followed the vehicle through South Surrey where it was seen speeding, running lights and driving into oncoming traffic.

The suspect vehicle eventually turned on 51B Avenue,  a dead end street, from 192 Street in Cloverdale and was arrested by police.

A dog service officer was airlifted to hospital after crashing over an embankment while trying to stop the dangerous driver.

The officer had minor injuries and the police dog was checked over by a veterinarian, but was uninjured.

Ball is a career criminal who had just been arrested the previous week. He is facing charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle and other charges.

A search of his vehicle located several stolen license plates, break and enter tools, electronic equipment and keys. He is prohibited from driving for 10 years.

“Prolific offenders will often steal vehicles or licence plates and use them to commit other crimes. In this case, the suspect put the lives of our officers and the public at risk through dangerous driving despite facing a 10-year driving prohibition,” said Sgt. Dale Carr of the Surrey RCMP.

Ball had just been arrested in Abbotsford March 5 for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of stolen property, driving while suspended, etc. He was let out on $500 bail the next day.

In April 2014, Ball was sentenced to 14 months jail for stealing a vehicle.

In 2010, there was a manhunt for Ball, 21 at the time, who had escaped a prison work program in Pitt Meadows. He was later arrested.
