Surrey man fails roadside breath test, and earns an immediate roadside suspension

An ice cream truck driver has had his driving privileges frozen after being determined drunk when he drove his treat-loaded van into a ditch in Whalley.

At about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, witnesses saw an ice cream truck drive over their lawn, knock over garbage cans, and eventually veer into a ditch.

The 45-year-old driver from Surrey, got out and tried to leave, however several residents near the crash at 141 Street and 100 Avenue watched him until police arrived.

The driver was given a roadside breathalyzer test, and failed.

As a result, police gave him a roadside suspension, prohibiting him from driving for 90 days.

The ice-cream truck has also been impounded for 30 days.

Police say it’s extremely fortunate no one was hurt in the accident.

Because the police opted for a in immediate roadside suspension, no further charges of impaired driving are being considered.

Mounties are seeking the public’s assistance and are asking that anyone that may have witnessed the truck driving prior to it going into the ditch, or stopped to help at the scene are asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
