Arson suspected after fire at Surrey towing company

Surrey RCMP said they were called in after fire investigators ‘deemed the fire as arson’ on Jan. 12

Police say arson is suspected after a fire at a Newton towing company on Jan. 12.

Surrey RCMP Sergeant Chad Greig said police were involved after fire investigators “deemed the fire as arson.”

“The investigation is ongoing and there are no suspects at this time,” Greig told the Now-Leader.

Surrey battalion chief Reo Jerome said crews noticed “something suspicious” at the scene of the fire, near 124th Street and 83rd Avenue, around 4:55 a.m. on Jan. 12.

On Monday, Surrey RCMP wouldn’t comment on the “suspicious thing at this time, as that would be considered evidence in the ongoing investigation.”

The fire was called in by someone in one of the high rises across Scott Road in Delta, noted Jerome.

Firefighters arrived to find the aluminum-clad commercial building “fully involved,” he said.

The gate, Jerome added, was locked, so the firefighters had to “force entry through the gate.”

“There were several small explosions as there are with industrial buildings like that.”

Jerome said once the fire was knocked down, the building was “collapsed in on itself.”
