Former Surrey council candidates Grant Rice and John Wolanski have joined the race for the mayor's chair this fall.

Rice and Wolanski are listed as running for mayor this year as an independent.

Rice has challenged council both on the hustings and frequently at council meetings, often defending his home community of St. Helen's Park.

He could not be reached for comment by Leader press time Friday.

Wolanski told The Leader in 2008 that he was looking to create "a safe, vibrant community for all… Every culture and person has to be included and be able to address those issues of most concern to us as a city."

The two will be running against former mayor Doug McCallum, Coun. Linda Hepner, Coun. Barinder Rasode, John Edwards and Vikram Bajwa.

The civic election will be held Saturday, Nov. 15.
