Global tech services company Concentrix is set to close its doors in Chilliwack this fall.
The tech centre has operated for more than 20 years at the same location under different corporate owners, including Convergys and Stream, with thousands of people employed at the Chilliwack location over the years from across the region.
"We recently announced that our Chilliwack, British Columbia site is closing at the end of September 2024, impacting approximately 179 of our game-changers," according the Concentrix media team in a release.
Confidentiality concerns prevent them from providing exact details about staffing.
"Our highest priority has been to consider the potential changes for our game-changers and align support and options for them. Should the opportunity arise, we will work with each person directly to help them apply for other open positions within the company," the statement from Concentrix said.
At one time the tech services centre was considered the largest single-site employer east of the Port Mann bridge with more than 1,000 staff. In 2019 the company had about 300 employees.
The Chilliwack Progress asked the reason why Concentrix was preparing to shutter the local centre.
"We never take lightly the decision to close a site, however from time to time, company business objectives change and this decision was a result of those changes. Our first priority has been to share this news with our game-changers, and the options that are available to them."
Asked how many staff were working in Chilliwack, and how many jobs would be lost with the closure, officials would not elaborate on how many might be transferred to other locations, or offered work-from-home options.
"Concentrix takes the confidentiality of our game-changers extremely seriously, and because of this we never make comment or release any information in relation to them."
