South Surrey-White Rock–Cloverdale MP Russ Hiebert will travel to Southeast Asia later this month to study the international problem of human trafficking.

The trip, sponsored by World Vision, a Canadian charity that addresses human trafficking and refugee issues in Southeast Asia, will be at no cost to taxpayers, Hiebert notes, although it does mean he will miss Canada Day activities in his home riding.

“I believe people understand the seriousness of the issues I’ll be examining overseas and why I’ve made this trip a priority,” he said in a news release, adding it dovetails with his parliamentary work as a member of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights.

“Cracking down on the immoral trade in vulnerable people... is a priority for our government and I am travelling to one of the more notorious centres of the trade to see what Canada can do about this problem internationally,” Hiebert said.
