13 years after the shooting of Shane Preece in Surrey

Langley man convicted in 13-year-old Surrey murder

David Langlet found guilty of first-degree murder in fatal 2000 shooting of Shane Preece.

A Langley man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in a shooting that took place behind a Surrey restaurant more than 13 years ago.

David Lawrence Robert Langlet was convicted in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Monday (Dec. 9).

It was shortly before midnight on June 12, 2000 when 27-year-old Shane Murray Preece was shot dead in a Jeep Cherokee near J.D.’s Family Restaurant on 152 Street in North Surrey.

Customers at the restaurant who had stepped outside for a cigarette reported hearing several shots coming from the alley.

It wasn’t until October 2013, after the Surrey RCMP Unsolved Homicide Unit reopened the case, that police arrested and charged Langlet.

A first-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. Langlet is also subject to a lifetime firearms ban.
