Conflicts caused by roadwork on west Marine Drive has resulted in changes to White Rock’s traffic-management plan for the project, and an extended timeline for completion.
Bob Ambardar, a city engineer, told council last week that only buses and local traffic would be allowed south of North Bluff Road between Bishop Road and High Street.
Crews have been working since February to replace the road, road base, sidewalk and service connections of Marine Drive along the four-block stretch, following council approval in January of a $1.5-million contract to Imperial Paving Ltd.
Initial traffic-management plans included temporary re-routing of the C51 bus.
According to a staff report, the plans were modified March 14 after residents expressed concern with increased truck traffic, improper signage and an increase in non-local traffic.
Ambardar said the city is working with Epcor on a water-main replacement for the same stretch of Marine.
The work is expected to extend the project’s timeline by about three weeks; a delay Mayor Wayne Baldwin described as “not a good thing.”
