A call reporting barrels dumped near 181 Street and 12 Avenue in South Surrey led police to remnants of a suspected clandestine drug lab.
A Surrey RCMP spokesman said police were alerted to the barrels around 8 a.m. last Friday (April 22) after Surrey firefighters responding to the scene found “a number of barrels with chemicals and other material commonly found at clan labs.”
The Mounties’ Clandestine Laboratory and Response Team attended, along with forensics, drug-unit officers and a cleanup crew.
Bobby Popoff, an Ocean Park resident who came across the scene around 3 p.m. that day, said police had 12 Avenue blocked from just west of 184 Street, and there was a “really heavy-duty smell, as if somebody was irrigating the field with liquid manure.”
Among the vehicles he saw was a five-ton flat-deck truck loaded with approximately 30 square yellow barrels.
Police say investigation is ongoing, including checks with area residents.
