The City of White Rock will not hold a byelection to replace a councillor who died last month.
On recommendation of city clerk Tracey Arthur, council voted unanimously Monday to authorize a council of six members to continue until the Nov. 15 general election and amend the deputy-mayor rotation to address the vacancy created by Larry Robinson's death.
It was an agenda item that "fills me with sadness," Mayor Wayne Baldwin said in introducing the recommendations.
Robinson, a first-term councillor, succumbed to cancer on March 15.
Under provincial legislation, council has the discretion to pass a resolution to not hold a byelection if the elected official's death occurs after Jan. 1 in the year of a general local election.
