Surrey Mounties are taking the low number of drivers nabbed at a couple of roadblocks in Newton and Guildford on New Year’s Eve as a good sign.

Between 5:30 p.m. Dec. 31 and 4 a.m. Jan. 1, no criminal impaired driving charges were laid.

Only one motorist was charged with prohibited driving, four immediate roadside prohibitions were issued and nine violation tickets were dealt for various Motor Vehicle Act infractions.

“It’s great to see – that means more people are either having designated drivers, or they’re in a taxi, or using public transport or walking,” Sergeant Chad Greig told the Now-Leader. “So it’s great to see.”

Roughly how many vehicles passed through these two roadblocks?

“You could easily say hundreds,” Greig said.

On Saturday, he said, the Surrey RCMP checked roughly 850 motorists and issued three immediate roadside prohibitions, impounded two vehicles and issued five violation tickets. On Sunday, out of about 1,900 drivers checked, “they got two immediate roadside prohibitions and one vehicle impound. That’s throughout Surrey.”
