Former White Rock council candidate Grant O'Kane will not be barred from running for office in the next municipal election.

City clerk Tracey Arthur confirmed last week that the White Rock businessman filed a campaign financing disclosure statement on March 28 for last fall's civic byelection.

In a report to council March 25, Arthur had noted that O'Kane, who missed the original Local Government Act March 5 deadline for filing a statement, would be disqualified from running in the next election unless he filed by April 4.

O'Kane paid the $500 fine for missing the original deadline, Arthur said.

In the lead-up to the Nov. 3 byelection, O'Kane had received endorsement from Mayor Wayne Baldwin. Other candidates and council members said at the time that Baldwin's action had violated an understanding that council members would not endorse candidates.

O'Kane could not be reached for comment by Peace Arch News' press time.
