The provincial police watchdog is investigating after an officer-involved incident with a car happened at 2:18 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 10) at 152 Street and 100 Ave in Guildford.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) released a statement on Saturday stating the incident was a shooting that happened during a police traffic stop. The IIO stated the driver was taken to the hospital with what was reported to be a self-inflicted life-threatening injury.

“He is not expected to survive.”

Traffic was blocked for several hours in all directions around 152 Street and 100 Avenue. The intersection re-opened around 11 p.m.

The IIO is investigating if the police’s “actions or inactions played a role in the shooting.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form at iiobc.ca.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
