Repairs to the south side of the Al Hogg Pavilion residential care facility at Peace Arch Hospital – which has been wrapped in plastic for several months – should be complete by the end of August, according to Fraser Health.
“The south side of the building had been experiencing intermittent leaks from wind-driven rain,” said spokesperson Tasleem Juma, who added the problem had been evident for two years prior to the start of the current repair project at the beginning of April.
“The work is on schedule and should be complete by the end of summer,” she said.
The building has been swathed in protective sheeting since last fall.
“Because of the design and construction of the building, we couldn’t do little fixes,” Juma explained.
“We realized the entire building envelope needed to be repaired.”
She said that while some residents had been moved inside the facility when the leaks were first detected, she is not aware of any negative impact on residents from the current work.
“We’ve also had positive feedback from neighbours who’ve told us they appreciate that the repairs are not being overly disruptive,” she said.
While the cost of repairs is not available, Juma said they had not placed an undue strain on the hospital’s resources.
“The work has been part of the operating budget – it hasn’t required additional funding,” she said.
