PHOTOS: Windstorm wreaks havoc on Chilliwack roads

Vehicles and homes damaged; semi truck pushed over by strong winds

A windstorm that swept through Chilliwack caused heavy property damage, with trees crashing into homes and ripping the roof off at least one barn.

The wind also pushed over a semi truck on Highway 1 near the Annis Road exit, which landed in the meridian.

Crews were kept busy throughout the day in Chilliwck, beginning at noon, as countless trees fell into power lines, and power lines themselves snapped. BC Hydro said that 290,000 customers were affected by Monday's windstorm, with some of the hardest hit communities being Surrey and North Vancouver, the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast.

Chilliwack had about 20 power outages, affecting about 3,000 customers. By Tuesday morning, the number of outages was down to 12 outages, with about 220 customers affected. Crews were on site or assigned to almost all of the sites.
