A pedestrian remains in hospital in critical condition after an accident in Tsawwassen earlier this week .

In an update provided to media Thursday, police identified the victim as a Richmond residents in his 50s, noting his next-of-kin has been notified of his conditions.

The incident took place on 56th Street near 16th Avenue on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 26, closing the area to traffic for several hours. Police said the driver remained on the scene, and that early indications are that the collision was “simply a tragic accident.”

Police say the man apparently fell from the sidewalk into traffic, striking a passing tandem dump truck.

“At this point it does not appear that the driver of the dump trunk was speeding, distracted, impaired or had committed any intersection violation,” Delta Police Department public affairs manager Cris Leykauf said in a press release.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact lead investigator Const. Grayson Smith by email at gsmith@deltapolice.ca or call 604-946-4411 and request to leave a message for him.
