A 21-year-old was shot Monday in what Surrey police believe was a targeted incident.

The man showed up at an area hospital around 8:40 p.m. June 27 – less than an hour after police were alerted to shots fired in a Newton neighbourhood.

In an initial news release issued Monday night, police said they found evidence of shots fired in the 12800-block of 60 Avenue around 8 p.m., but no victims.

A second news release describing a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound was issued just before noon on Tuesday.

"Officers are investigating whether there are any linkages between this incident and the shots-fired incident that occurred last night," the release states.

The victim, it notes, is known to police.

According to the initial release, two vehicles were seen fleeing the  shots-fired scene. Descriptions of the vehicles have not been confirmed.

Newton has experienced dozens of shootings so far this year, with police linking some to rival drug gangs.

Investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca
