Sidewalks on track

Construction of scooter- and walker-friendly sidewalks will soon get underway in two areas of White Rock.

Construction of scooter- and walker-friendly sidewalks will soon get underway in two areas of White Rock, following council support of a contract valued at nearly $400,000 before tax.

Council Monday voted in favour of a staff recommendation to award the work to J.Cote & Sons, at a cost of $388,566.50 plus HST.

The project will address sidewalks on Roper Avenue between Finlay and Kent Streets, and at the intersection of Fir Street and Russell Avenue.

The sites were identified in the city's strategic transportation plan prepared in 2006.

The total cost, estimated at just over $440,000, is supported in part by a $238,770 Build Canada grant.

In discussing the contract award, Coun. Al Campbell commended the city's engineering staff for "being on top" of savings that can be found in early bidding.

"This is a $550,000 happening that we get done for $435,000," Campbell said. "This is a big win for us.

The work is anticipated to get underway before March 31.
