A well-known Peninsula couple who are facing homelessness once again are appealing to the community to help them keep a roof over their heads.
Roy Mercer said he and Darlene Fox – along with their two roommates – have been told they have until the end of April to move out of the 24 Avenue house they call home. The property is slated for a multi-family development
"We're being left out in the cold again," Mercer told Peace Arch News last week. "At the end of the month, we're all supposed to be gone."
The couple was first featured in the PAN nearly a decade ago, when they were living in a makeshift camp on a secluded lot near King George Boulevard and 32 Avenue, meting out a living collecting bottles.
More recently, they've been renting the 24 Avenue house, after having to move from a rented home in the 2600-block of King George Boulevard.
Mercer continues to work part-time at a car wash and doing odd jobs, but says without a place to call home, he and Fox will be "back to square one again, back to pushing a cart."
Efforts to find a new home have come up empty, he said.
"There's absolutely nothing. I'm so tired of this."
