South Surrey mother’s murder trial delayed

Proceedings against Lisa Batstone are now scheduled to get underway in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster in September

The trial of a South Surrey mother charged with killing her eight-year-old daughter has been delayed.

Teagan BatstoneProceedings against Lisa Deanne Batstone are now scheduled to get underway in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Sept. 25, 2017 – nearly three years after the body of her daughter Teagan (pictured at left), a Grade 3 student at Rosemary Heights Elementary, was discovered in the back of a car in a cul-de-sac just south of Crescent Road (below).

The trial had initially been set for June 5-30, 2017.

Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel for the Criminal Justice Branch, confirmed Friday that the adjournment was sought by the accused, “as her new counsel was not available for the previously scheduled trial date.”

She was arrested Dec. 10, 2014 in connection with her daughter’s death. Charged with second-degree murder, she was deemed the following month to be fit to stand trial, after a court-ordered “fitness assessment.”

In an appearance in Surrey Provincial Court last January, Batstone consented to remain in custody until trial. At the time, she was being held in a psychiatric hospital.

McLaughlin confirmed Friday that Batstone remains in custody.
