Surrey RCMP are reassuring the public there is no cause for alarm, after a report of a sexual assault in South Surrey prompted a brief appeal for help identifying a suspect.

Cpl. Bert Paquet confirmed Wednesday that the appeal – issued Sunday afternoon – was cancelled after "we found some inconsistencies in our investigation that led us to believe this never happened."

According to the initial release – which included a composite drawing of a suspect – an assault on a teenaged girl occurred late Oct. 25 in Alderwood Park.

The alert was cancelled less than an hour after it was issued.

"There's absolutely no risk," Paquet said.
