A new water park at South Surrey Athletic Park will connect to the playground and is expected complete by end of May 2017.

South Surrey Athletic Park's new water park is expected ready for summer.

Surrey council last month gave unanimous support to award the construction contract – authorizing spending of up to $965,000 including GST and contingency – to Cedar Crest Lands (BC) Ltd.

According to a corporate report, the work is the second of two phases of construction at the park. The first – to decommission the water park, improve the park's road network and add parking – was completed last June.

Phase 2 includes "a new, more interactive and more efficient water park next to an expansion of the existing playground," as well as a small artificial-turf warmup lawn for soccer events, the report states.

Last summer, Surrey's manager of parks planning Ted Uhrich described the work as "a great opportunity to bring (the water park and playground) directly next to each other and create a really fun core to the park, where the kids, parents and families could all hang out together when they're not playing sports or at the rec centre."

The work is scheduled to be complete by May 26.
