South Surrey woman lobbies for off-leash dog trails

Lisa Wong has started an online petition at change.org

A South Surrey woman is lobbying for more off-leash dog-friendly trails in the city.

Last month, Lisa Wong started an online petition that aims to provide more space on local trails for people who wish to walk with their dogs off-leash.

“There are no options for people to hike or walk with their dogs off-leash yet there are hundreds of trails and paths for joggers and bikers,” Wong wrote to the City of Surrey in an email, a copy of which was provided to the Peace Arch News.

“Our parks are under-utilized… as dog owners, residents, taxpayers and voters, we have a voice to say how (our) parks are to be enjoyed and shared.”

City of Surrey parks manager Owen Croy could not be reached for comment.

Wong suggests giving off-leash status to portions of trails in three South Surrey parks – Dogwood Park, Crescent Park and Sunnyside Urban Forest.

There are currently nine off-leash dog parks – though not trails, specifically – in Surrey, including areas at both Dogwood Park and at Blackie Spit near Crescent Beach.

“Dogwood Park is the only park of any significant size, yet to walk around in circles to get even 30 minutes of exercise everyday is quite mind-numbing for humans and dogs alike,” Wong said.

The petition currently has 195 supporters, and can be viewed by visiting www.change.org and searching for “leash optional South Surrey.”
