A handful of South Surrey schools are closed Thursday following power outages caused by a strong windstorm overnight.

Classes were cancelled at Elgin Park and Clayton Heights secondary schools, and Chantrell Creek, East Kensington and Pacific Heights elementary schools for the day, according to a release on the Surrey School District's website.

Closure updates can be found online at www.surreyschools.ca

Also closed Thursday morning was White Rock's pier and a section of the promenade on East Beach. According to a social media post by Coun. Lynne Sinclair, city crews were working with police and fire services to ensure residents stayed clear of the waterfront, where heavy winds and strong waves flooded parts of the promenade.
