Students at East Kensington Elementary School, along with RCMP members and community policing volunteers, helped raise road-safety awareness last week during a morning safety blitz.

The campaign, held Sept. 19 in front of the South Surrey school - located at 2795 184 St. – was co-sponsored by the RCMP, ICBC and the Surrey School Board. During the event, which was held during the morning rush, RCMP flagged down and pulled over drivers who who were clocked over the school-zone speed limit or who were seen to be distracted by cellphones.

Once pulled over and given a warning by the RCMP officer, the drivers were issued home-made tickets by one of the participating students.

A handful of vehicles were pulled over and given a ticket – including one teacher, who was recognized by a former student.
