Surrey mayoral candidate John Edwards leading in latest pie poll

Pastry with steak and kidney could be the reason, but pollster says vegetarians may put John Wolanski (cheese and onion) in the lead.

The latest poll in Surrey's mayoral race has Independent John Edwards in the lead.

The British Store and Sherlock's Cafe at 13369 72 St. started a pie poll this month, featuring all of the mayoral candidates in the upcoming race.

Store owner Andy Bradshaw said the poll was started as soon as candidates were announced.

As of Oct. 28, Edwards (steak and kidney pie) was at 41, outstripping Surrey First's Linda Hepner (chicken) by five. Closely following Hepner was Doug McCallum (chicken and mushroom) at 32, Barinder Rasode (steak) at 28, Vikram Bajwa (steak and Guiness) at 27, and John Wolanski (cheese and onion) at 21.

All candidates were paired with the pies by draw of the hat. Bradshaw points out nothing should be read into the character of the candidate and the contents of their corresponding pie.

"There was no rationale. I'll let people read into it the way they want to," Bradshaw said Wednesday.

He couldn't say whether it was the candidates or their families who are buying the pies.

He describes the pie-buyer turnout as brisk. He couldn't say what percentage of registered pie-buyers have shown up to purchase.

Unlike the vote on Nov. 15 for the civic election, peckish pie purchasers can cast their ballot as many times as they want.

There are 12 types of pies available at the British Store, but Bradshaw said he took his best sellers for the pie poll.

The results of the pie poll are accurate within 4.6 per cent, 19 pies out of 20.
