Surrey Mounties had two sports cars impounded that they say were caught street racing in Newton.

Both the Mustang and Camaro were impounded for seven days and the drivers, men ages 19 and 29, were issued a $736 fine each. Police say they were caught doing 101 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in the area of 138 Street and 72 Avenue.

Police tweeted about it on May 24 but Cpl. Vanessa Munn said it happened on April 27, just before 7 p.m. She said both cars stopped after a police officer spotted them speeding away when the light turned green.

“The police officer activated their lights and sirens as they normally would to conduct a traffic stop and both cars stopped,” she said.

“It is behaviour that we do see and our traffic unit actively targets just due to the increased risk it causes to everyone in the surrounding area that’s utilizing the streets,” Munn added.
