The end of the year marks the end of eight-and-a-half years of Mike McKay being at the helm of the Surrey School District.

As such, school trustees recognized the superintendent’s service and contributions to the district, students and community at a meeting Dec. 12.

McKay is retiring Dec. 31, with current deputy superintendent Jordan Tinney taking his place in the new year.

The board commended McKay on his “legacy of success” and “exceptional leadership and support” of staff and students.

“He has been successful because of his passion for education and his belief in the importance and the difference educators make in supporting, shaping and preparing the young minds destined to lead us,” said board of education chair Shawn Wilson. “For Mike it’s about helping children explore, then realize their potential … while thoroughly enjoying the journey.”
