A candlelight vigil has been planned for Friday evening in Surrey to pay respects to Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd and other victims of bullying.
The event is organized by Global Girl Power (GGP), a newly formed Surrey organization "committed to empower, educate, support, protect, and respect women and girls around the world because every girl has the power to change this world."
Todd committed suicide last week after posting a video online a month earlier detailing the years of harassment she endured. In the video, the 15-year-old described how she was bullied online and at school, and was being blackmailed by a stranger online to provide nude photos.
Her tragic story went viral almost immediately, with dozens of memorial Facebook pages set up and events organized around the globe to shine a light on the dire effects of cyberbullying.
The GGP vigil will be held Oct. 19 in Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd., at 6 p.m.
As of Wednesday afternoon, GGP said there were 24 cities across three countries where vigils were also planned for Friday.
Attendees at the Surrey event are asked to bring a small candle and wear pink.
