The city's top cop has been named Assistant Commissioner.

Surrey RCMP Officer-in-Charge Chief Supt. Bill Fordy received the new rank this week, and while it increases his role in the region, he will remain in charge of Surrey's detachment.

“Bill Fordy has made invaluable contributions to the people of Surrey and his promotion is well-deserved,” said Mayor Linda Hepner.

Fordy has been with the RCMP since 1989 and became Surrey's officer in charge in June 2012, with the rank of Chief Superintendent.

In 2014, Fordy was appointed into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by the Governor General of Canada. The Order of Merit of the Police Forces recognizes leadership and exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of the Canadian Police Services throughout their career.
