Targeted shooting in Guildford Monday night

Police exploring any possible gang links to the attempted hit.

Police are exploring any gang links to a shooting in Guildford last night involving three people known to operate in the criminal underworld.

At about 10:40 p.m. Monday, gunmen approached an SUV at 101 Avenue and 153 Street and fired shots into the vehicle.

One of the occupants was injured by flying glass, but no one was hit by the hail of bullets.

Police say it was a targeted shooting, and the occupants of the SUV are known to police.

“They have connections in the criminal underworld,” said RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger.

He could not say yet whether the shooting was a retaliation for the Kelowna killing Sunday of Jonathan Bacon of the Red Scorpions gang.

“There’s absolutely no correlation yet, no,” Grainger said. “It’s way too early to make those kind of speculative remarks.”

Experts believe there will be some type of retaliatory strike for that fatal shooting.

That’s not lost on Surrey RCMP.

“Here we have a spike in gang activity in British Columbia and of course we’re engaged on what’s going on for possible repercussions that might happen in this city,” Grainger said.

He said because the shootings tend to be highly targeted, the public has no cause for alarm.

That said, the public might want to forego attending places known to be frequented by gangsters.

“The public needs to be mindful of the environment that they are in, because often we have seen innocent victims because of this gang violence, ” Grainger said. “Just to open their eyes, look around, and be wary of the place that they are in.”
