Targeted shooting in North Delta now a homicide

Police have identified the victim as 29-year-old Delta resident Gurvinder Uppal

The man injured in Monday morning's shooting in North Delta has died, police report.

On Jan. 20, at about 7:18 a.m., Delta police were called to a shooting at a home in the 8100-block of 112B Street.

Responding officers located a man "injured by gunfire in a targeted attack," according to a Delta Police Department press release, and he was transported to hospital for treatment.

Police say a white Ford pickup truck left the scene following the shooting. It was located on fire a short time later, at about 7:26 a.m., in the 7300-block of Blake Drive in North Delta.

In an update Tuesday, the DPD said the man, 29-year-old Delta resident Gurvinder Uppal, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

"The DPD extend condolences to the family for their loss," the department said in its press release.

The DPD’s Major Crime Section is now investigating the shooting as a homicide. The section investigates all serious offences in Delta including murders, as the Delta Police Department is not part of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Witnesses and anyone with information or video relating to the shooting and/or truck fire is asked to contact the DPD at 604-940-7321 or tips@deltapolice.ca. Those who wish to remain anonymous can provide information to CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Monday's shooting is Delta's first homicide of the year. There were no homicides in the city in 2024.

According to Statistics Canada data, there were eight homicides in Delta from 2013 through 2023: one in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2022, and two in 2023. Four of those cases have been cleared, each resulting in charges.
