An explosion and townhouse fire in Aldergrove overnight sent two people to hospital, according to Langley RCMP.

The explosion – possibly caused by a butane extraction site in the centre of a garage – rocked the multi-family complex in the 27000 block of 31A Avenue at about 12:30 a.m., said Langley Township deputy fire chief Bruce Ferugson.

Three residences were on fire when emergency crews arrived, and two men were found in the middle garage suffering from severe burns, said RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

One of the men was transported by helicopter to hospital, while the other was taken by ambulance. Their condition at this time is unknown.

While police are reporting that no one else was injured, one other person was apparently treated for smoke inhalation, said Ferguson.

“Everyone was accounted for early on with the help of the RCMP and ambulance [crews],” he elaborated. Several cats were also successfully rescued from the fire.

Three units were seriously damaged by the fire. Ferguson said it took at least five crews, including full-time and on-call crews, to put out the blaze.

Due to the extend of the damage, police are currently waiting for a structural engineer to determine if it’s safe to enter.

In the meantime, Langley’s client support and victim services attended to provide support and assistance to the families from all three residences displaced by the blaze.

The fire is considered suspicious and the RCMP are now investigating.
