A small, rain-soaked memorial has appeared at the Cloverdale Cenotaph in Surrey Museum Plaza, where the City of Surrey, Canadian, and B.C. flags are flying at half staff.

Tributes left on the monument consist of scarlet carnations and white roses, tea light candles, and an anonymous hand-written message of condolence to the family of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, who was killed Wednesday while on guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

"Thank you Cpl. Cirillo," the message reads. "On guard forever, we will never forget. May you rest in peace and your family know you are remembered."
